This absolutely spectacular 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle from Magnolia features the irresistibly detailed illustration art of Turkish artist Serhat Filiz, and it is one of his most ambitious and brilliantly conceived scenes yet. A multi-generational family navigates a world where retro aesthetics and futuristic technology have collided in the most wonderfully chaotic, hilarious, and lovingly rendered way imaginable. Flying Cadillacs, robot dogs, holographic cats, and a grandmother who is deeply unimpressed by all of it — welcome to Retro Future.
Serhat Filiz's Retro Future is a masterwork of retro-futurist scene-building — a richly detailed interior that places a 1970s family home at the intersection of everything the past imagined the future would look like, rendered with the extraordinary character work and visual density that defines the artist's best work. The scene unfolds in a warm, wood-paneled living room where vintage and futuristic technology coexist in glorious, comic harmony. Through a large picture window, a neon-lit cityscape buzzes with flying vintage Cadillacs, hovering cars, and retro-futurist architecture. A father in a flared-collar shirt reads a holographic newspaper in his armchair while a mother in a geometric print pantsuit dances nearby holding a smartphone. A delighted young boy rides a robot dog across the carpet. A grandfather chuckles on the floor beside a terrier wearing a tiny mechanical device. A little girl in a mod dress holds a red rotary telephone with wide, uncertain eyes. A baby in overalls surfs a hoverboard through the kitchen doorway, parrot flying overhead. In the kitchen, a grandmother in a patterned housedress points firmly at a sleek humanoid robot who is attempting — apparently incorrectly — to assist with the cooking. A holographic cat glides on a Roomba in the lower left, robot toy sets and vintage cassette tapes litter the floor, a gramophone with futuristic modifications plays in the corner, and a sleeping mechanical cat curls beneath the coffee table. The left wall is lined with vintage televisions, reel-to-reel equipment, dials, gauges, and a Mona Lisa displayed on a screen. Every single detail in this Magnolia jigsaw puzzle is a joke, a reference, or a tiny visual reward that makes the assembly experience as entertaining as the finished result.
